City DescriptionSledge is a town located in Quitman County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 529.
Famous African American Country singer Charley Pride is from Sledge. Leroy Brown was an actual man from the area who may have very well have been the inspiration for the Jim Croce song. This area is considered by some to be the genuine birthplace of the blues. Many of the blues greats grew up and nurtured their music in the juke joints surrounding Sledge.
Sledge is located at 34°25'59" North, 90°13'12" West (34.433030, -90.220111).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), of which, 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 529 people, 170 households, and 133 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,011.3 people per square mile (392.8/km²). There were 185 housing units at an average density of 353.7/sq mi (137.4/km²).
