City DescriptionQuitman is a city in Clarke County, Mississippi, USA, along the Chickasawhay River. The population was 2,463 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. This is the hometown of Detroit Pistons power forward Antonio McDyess. CNN News anchor Anderson Cooper traces his ancestry to Quitman, since his father, the writer Wyatt Emory Cooper was born here before moving to New Orleans, Louisiana.
Quitman is located at 32°2′35″N 88°43′15″W / 32.04306, -88.72083 (32.043004, -88.720867).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km²), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.4 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²) of it (12.37%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,463 people, 975 households, and 674 families residing in the city. The population density was 475.9 people per square mile (183.6/km²). There were 1,097 housing units at an average density of 212.0/sq mi (81.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 66.26% White, 33.25% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.41% of the population.
