City DescriptionPicayune is the largest city in Pearl River County in Mississippi, a state of the United States of America. The population according to the 2007 census estimate was 11,591. Picayune is the business and medical center of Pearl River County. Picayune is located approximately 45 miles from New Orleans, Hattiesburg, and Gulfport/Biloxi. The Stennis Space Center is 10 miles away.
Picayune received minimal damage from Hurricane Katrina. This has caused it to become the permanent home for many who relocated from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans seeking a safe homesite with easy commuting to those areas. The bulk of the damage in Picayune was caused by wind damage. This resulted in a lot of fence, roof, and window damage. The wind also caused many power outages for several weeks.
Picayune is located at 30°31′41″N 89°40′49″W / 30.52806, -89.68028 (30.528089, -89.680182).
