City Description

Myrtle is a town in Union County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 407 at the 2000 census. Myrtle is located at 34°33′29″N 89°7′3″W / 34.55806, -89.1175 (34.558152, -89.117436). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 407 people, 162 households, and 117 families residing in the town. The population density was 715.6 people per square mile (275.7/km²). There were 183 housing units at an average density of 321.7/sq mi (124.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 85.26% White, 13.02% African American, 1.72% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.72% of the population. There were 162 households out of which 42.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 19.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01. In the town the population was spread out with 32.7%
