McLain is located at 31°6′18″N 88°49′26″W / 31.105, -88.82389 (31.104985, -88.823788).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 square miles (8.9 km²), of which, 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.45%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 603 people, 228 households, and 157 families residing in the town. The population density was 177.7 people per square mile (68.7/km²). There were 277 housing units at an average density of 81.6/sq mi (31.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 63.68% White, 35.66% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, and 0.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.33% of the population.
