    • Several shoplifters were arrested in Lexington

      Lexington Police Department reported that several arrests were made during the past week for shoplifting. Captain Charles Sharkey reported that in the first incident on December 3, Larry Darnell Lee of Louisville was arrested for shoplifting at Family Dollar Store in Lexington. When Lexington policemen found Lee the next day, Sharkey said he had 17 items in his car that were stolen from Family Dollar. Sharkey also reported that Philadelphia had outstanding warrants for Lee for shoplifting and Indianola had a warrant for Lee for allegedly stealing a car.

      Assistant Lexington Police Chief Mitch Bethany said someone burglarized Dollar General on Hwy. 12 East in Lexington on Thursday, November 6 at approximately 3:00 a.m.

      He said the burglars apparently road a four wheeler across the wooded area behind the store. To gain access to the store building, Bethany said the burglars broke through an outside wall in the back part of the business and used a cutting torch to open the safe. He said they cut the phone lines to the burglar alarm system and then tore down the fire alarms in the building in order to prevent them from going off.

    • Authors' aim is to inspire young readers with Charlie

      Authors and Holmes County residents Alyssa and Keath Killebrew will release their first book on Thursday, November 6. They will hold a book signing on November 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peoples Drug Store booth at Mistletoe Marketplace in Flowood. On November 10 they will be signing books and displaying their art at the Holmes County Arts Council on the Square in Lexington.

    • Lexington Square Project is in Progress

      Work was begun on the medians on the Lexington Square on Tuesday morning, October 14. Mayrant & Associates, a Jackson contractor, is doing the work. Those on hand for the beginning of the work, shown from left, were: John McIlwain, Mayrant project manager; Matt Murray, Mayrant superintendent; Danny Johnson, public works director/safety officer for the City of Lexington; and Lexington Mayor Robin McCrory. The project will include landscaping and plants. The bricks under the medians will be removed and used for walks and accents around the medians. No completion date has been set for the project that is being done by MDOT with funds from a Federal Highway Administration grant.    

    • Holmes County Hospital and Clinics Community Advisory committee met

      Holmes County Hospital and Clinics hosted its quarterly community advisory luncheon Sept. 26 in the hospital conference room. Attending the meeting were: Representative Bryant Clark, Phil Cohen, Rev. Nathanial Christian, Nancy Lowe, Mayor Robin McCrory, Dewery Montgomery, Pam Hooker, Ann Presley, and Jennifer Self.

      Dewery Montgomery, HCHC chief operating officer, welcomed those in attendance and introduced the featured speaker, Jennifer Self, registered respiratory therapist.

      Self discussed two updated respiratory department services now being provided. She said the current EKG and Holter recordings are transmitted to the Heart Station at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Every EKG/Holter is interpreted by a cardiologist on staff and compared to previous tracings.

    • Court continues with pleas, trials

      The October term of Holmes County Circuit Court got under way on Monday, September 22 with the empanelment of a Grand Jury. The Grand Jury returned 41 true bills or indictments and 15 no bills.

      The week of September 22-26 was taken up by appeals, arraignment, and civil cases.

      Those who have entered guilty pleas during this term of court include the following:

      In case #11,982 Kentaiss Vance aka Ted Vance and Malcolm Cooper, who both entered guilty pleas to the charge of receiving stolen property. Both were sentenced to 3 years in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with the sentence suspended and each to serve one year under house arrest followed by two years of supervised probation. They are each to pay court costs of $270.50, attorney's fees of $500.00, and $850.00 restitution.

    Lexington is a city in Holmes County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,025 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Holmes County. Lexington is located at 33°6′52″N 90°3′4″W / 33.11444, -90.05111 (33.114329, -90.051191). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.4 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,025 people, 725 households, and 503 families residing in the city. The population density was 825.6 people per square mile (319.1/km²). There were 802 housing units at an average density of 327.0/sq mi (126.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 31.36% White, 67.26% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.64% Asian, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.98% of the population.
