Heidelberg is located at 31°53′28″N 88°59′27″W / 31.89111, -88.99083 (31.891249, -88.990952).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13.3 km²), of which, 5.1 square miles (13.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.39%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 840 people, 320 households, and 224 families residing in the town. The population density was 164.3 people per square mile (63.5/km²). There were 359 housing units at an average density of 70.2/sq mi (27.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 73.33% African American, 26.31% White and 0.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.36% of the population.
There were 320 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% were married couples living together, 25.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
