City Description

Arcola is a town in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 563 at the 2000 census and the mayor is Clifton Harris. Arcola is located at 33°16′12″N 90°52′49″W / 33.27, -90.88028 (33.270106, -90.880297). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 563 people, 183 households, and 122 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,515.2 people per square mile (988.1/km²). There were 220 housing units at an average density of 982.9/sq mi (386.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.03% African American, 4.80% White and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population. There were 183 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 23.0% were married couples living together, 36.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
