City Description

Winton is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 185 at the 2000 census. It is also home to a small hydroelectric dam on the edge of Garden Lake, one of 11 stations owned by Minnesota Power. Minnesota Highway 169 serves as a main arterial route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²), all of it land. Home of the world famous Matt Tholen. As of the census of 2000, there were 185 people, 85 households, and 49 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,421.2 people per square mile (549.5/km²). There were 97 housing units at an average density of 745.2/sq mi (288.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.46% White and 0.54% Native American. 22.4% were of German, 17.8% Finnish, 8.6% Slovene, 7.2% Norwegian, 7.2% Scandinavian, 6.6% Swedish, 5.9% Polish and 5.3% English ancestry according to Census 2000. There were 85 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 37.6% of all households were made
