City DescriptionWindom is a city in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,490 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cottonwood County. Windom has been assigned ZIP code 56101 by the USPS.
Although it is a small, rural farming community, Windom is host to several parks including a newly installed disc golf course at Mayflower Park. The Des Moines River flows through Windom, and serves as a gentle, rapid-free canoeing spot. Windom is the birthplace of composer Maria Schneider and game show announcer Johnny Olson.
Windom is located at 43°51′59″N 95°07′01″W / 43.86639, -95.11694 (43.866346, -95.116937). It lies 1,362 feet (415 m) above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.2 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (5.08%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,490 people, 1,910 households, and 1,195 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,263.6 people per square mile (488.3/km²).
