City Description

Shafer is a city in Chisago County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 343 at the 2000 census. U.S. Route 8 serves as a main arterial route for the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land. The Shafer watertower is the highest vertical point in the county. The city holds the Shafer Days celebration in early October. As of the census of 2000, there were 343 people, 124 households, and 93 families residing in the city. The population density was 540.7 people per square mile (210.2/km²). There were 129 housing units at an average density of 203.4/sq mi (79.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.13% White, 0.29% African American, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.75% of the population. There were 124 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 23.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% were non-families. 21.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 0.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
