Crews from three towns are battling a grain elevator fire in Rushmore, Minnesota.

The state fire marshal's office is expected at the scene of a grain elevator fire in Rushmore, in southwestern Minnesota. The main structure of the United Farmers Cooperative elevator was destroyed in the blaze that could be seen from Worthington, nine miles to the east. No one was hurt. An ambulance crew was on hand in case any firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, but no cases were reported. Nine area fire departments battled the blaze Thursday. Rushmore Fire Chief Larry Lupkes said a big challenge was getting enough water to continue fighting the fire. Rushmore's only water tower was emptied by about 3:30 in the afternoon. Water was hauled in from local farmers as well as from area fire departments.

City DescriptionRushmore is a city in Nobles County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 376 at the 2000 census. It is notable for being the true birthplace of Holden Caulfield and for its former Hamm's-serving establishment King's Place.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 376 people, 154 households, and 97 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,484.9 people per square mile (580.7/km²). There were 173 housing units at an average density of 683.2/sq mi (267.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.74% White, 0.27% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 3.19% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.99% of the population.
