• Board of Appeal looks at county values
  

  The valuation of one Spring Valley home was protested, while values and sales of property across the county were reviewed during the annual Fillmore County Board of Appeals and Equalization meeting. It was held last Tuesday afternoon at the commissioner's board room at the courthouse in Preston.

  Fillmore County assessor Cindy Blagsvedt first provided a review of the real estate market, which she said had seen less sales, while sales ratios continue to grow in some markets.

  Minnesota Department of Revenue rules state that median sales ratios are used for equalization. Six sales in any taxing district in any property class make up a valid sample, which then requires an adjusted sales ratio between 90 and 105 percent.

• Habitat for Humanity set to make impact in Rushford area
  

  The Rushford area community has spirit and a good work ethic. It's something organizers at Habitat for Humanity in Winona had noticed over the years, as they thought about bringing the group to the Root River valley.

  The determination and high morale of the community after the devastating flood in August of 2007 showed again what the people could do. It also showed the need for something Habitat for Humanity could do, and that's build homes for qualifying families.

  The Web site www.habitatwinona.org shares the purpose of the group, stating, "Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry that builds housing funded by private donations and constructed with volunteer labor. Our purpose is to build homes in partnership with families and sell the houses at no profit and no interest to families who could not otherwise afford a home."

City Description

Rushford Village is a city in Fillmore County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 714 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.7 square miles (87.2 km²), of which, 33.4 square miles (86.5 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (0.71%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 714 people, 264 households, and 214 families residing in the city. The population density was 21.4 people per square mile (8.3/km²). There were 279 housing units at an average density of 8.4/sq mi (3.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.02% White, 0.28% African American, 0.28% Asian, and 0.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.14% of the population. There were 264 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.9% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 15.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
