City DescriptionOkabena is a city in Jackson County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 185 at the 2000 census. The community name is a native term for "Nesting place of heron."
Most of the original settlers were driven out around 1862 due to a native uprising, but settlers began returning after the Civil War.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²), all of it land.
The community is located on County Roads 9 and 20 west of South Heron Lake.
As of the census of 2000, there were 185 people, 76 households, and 49 families residing in the city. The population density was 893.3 people per square mile (340.1/km²). There were 87 housing units at an average density of 420.1/sq mi (160.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.49% of the population.
There were 76 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or ...
