City DescriptionLafayette is a city in Nicollet County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 530 at the 2000 census. It is a small farming community just outside of the larger town of New Ulm, Minnesota.
Lafayette is part of the Mankato–North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Its biggest claim to fame is that it was the childhood home of Tippi Hedren, the star of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. In her book Cats of Shambala, she wrote that she was born in New Ulm, as Lafayette didn't have a hospital.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²), all of it land. The South Branch Rush River starts near Lafayette.
Minnesota State Highway 15 serves as a main route in the community.
As of the census of 2000, there were 529 people, 202 households, and 137 families residing in the city. The population density was 458.4 people per square mile (177.6/km²). There were 206 housing units at an average density of 178.5/sq mi (69.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.24% White, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.
