    City Description

    Gem Lake is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 419 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (2.63%) is water. Highway 61 serves as a main route. As of the census of 2000, there were 419 people, 139 households, and 111 families residing in the city. The population density was 378.7 people per square mile (145.7/km²). There were 145 housing units at an average density of 131.0/sq mi (50.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.79% White, 1.19% African American, 2.63% Asian, 0.72% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. There were 139 households out of which 44.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.9% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% were non-families. 18.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
