According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land.
Fountain is known as the sinkhole capital of the United States of America. Sinkholes are holes that form when cave or cavern roofs fall in bringing the ground down with it. The caverns normally form when ground water rubs against the underground limestone. When the water rubs the limestone the water becomes slightly acidic, then after the water becomes acidic it wears away at the limestone forcing caves to form.
As of the census of 2000, there were 343 people, 131 households, and 94 families residing in the city. The population density was 413.4 people per square mile (159.6/km²). There were 137 housing units at an average density of 165.1/sq mi (63.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.54% White, 0.58% Native American, and 0.87% from two or more races.
