County Commissioner Tom Bjerke, 46, of Spring Grove has served on the Houston County Board of Commissioners since January of 2005, representing the Fifth District, which includes the cities of Spring Grove and Eitzen and the townships of Spring Grove, Wilmington, Black Hammer, Winnebago, Jefferson and Crooked Creek. He is a fiancial associate with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, with an office in Caledonia. He is being challenged by Brad Hernandez, 36, of rural Mabel, who is farmer and Brent Newgaard, 40, of rural Spring Grove, who is a plumbing and heating contractor.
- Highway 76 detour begins Monday
A construction project on Highway 76, from the Iowa border to the south junction of Highway 44, will begin Monday, July 14, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. An open house about construction staging and detours for the project has been set for Wednesday, July 9, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Eitzen Community Center, 207 E. Main St. in Eitzen. A formal presentation will be at 6 p.m., followed by a question and answer period. The project consists of resurfacing and rehabilitating pavement, replacing culverts and guard rail and adding turn lanes. Motorists will experience daily lane closures between County Road 2 and County Road 27, with traffic controlled by flaggers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 229 people, 108 households, and 60 families residing in the city. The population density was 394.4 people per square mile (152.4/km²). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 191.2/sq mi (73.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White.
There were 108 households out of which 20.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 1.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.4% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 29.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
