According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.7 km²), of which, 1.0 square miles (2.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (7.69%) is water. Clinton is the home to the Big Stone County Fair and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Elem. School.
As of the census of 2000, there were 453 people, 195 households, and 118 families residing in the city. The population density was 471.0 people per square mile (182.2/km²). There were 230 housing units at an average density of 239.1/sq mi (92.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.79% White, 1.10% Native American, 0.88% Asian, and 0.22% from two or more races.
There were 195 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
