City DescriptionBackus is a city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 311 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land.
Minnesota State Highways 87 and 371 are two of the main routes in the community.
As of the census of 2000, there were 311 people, 123 households, and 83 families residing in the city. The population density was 518.9 people per square mile (200.1/km²). There were 194 housing units at an average density of 323.7/sq mi (124.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.07% White, 0.64% Asian, and 1.29% from two or more race.
There were 123 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 17.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.12.
