City Description

Belding is a city in Ionia County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,877 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.6 km²), of which, 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (3.29%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 5,877 people, 2,185 households, and 1,470 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,246.1 per square mile (480.7/km²). There were 2,289 housing units at an average density of 485.3/sq mi (187.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.46% White, 0.39% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.01% of the population. There were 2,185 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
