What island in Lake Michigan bears the name of a city which is a long way away, and a state which is further?

    Answer:
    Washington Island...

Why are waves on Lake Michigan larger than waves on Lake Huron?
    Question:
I've always noticed on Lake Huron we never have much for large waves, atleast at shore. On the East coast of Michigan. We only get medium sized waves during storms. But when I go to Lake Michigan, near the Sleeping Bear Dunes the waves are always high and large. Is it the corliosis(sp?) winds or whtever they are called going east?

    Answer:
"Fetch" is usually the reason, although depth of the water also plays a big part. Fetch is the unobstructed distance that wind can blow across a body of water while producing waves. As I recall, Huron is not as large as Michigan and does not have any great stretches of open water. This probably accounts for most of the difference. Contours of the shore line and bottom configuration can also cause cresting, reflection and its associated 'chop' formation. Under the right conditions 'chop' can produce substantial wave action as well.

What caused the chain of lakes from Great Bear Lake in Canada to Lake Ontario?
    Question:
Looking at my globe, I would have to say that the chain of lakes (Great Bear, Slave, Athabasca, Lynn, Winnipeg, Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario & many others) is, by length and size of bodies, a unique fresh water geologic feature on the planet. The East African chain Victoria-Nyasa is much smaller. The N. American giant fresh water lake chain includes by my count about 22 other lakes some of which, like Champlain and Abitibi, look small relative to the others but may be part of the same geologic formation? Is this the path of one humongous glacial advance/retreat or "random fresh water lakes"? I had thought the glacial advance was North to south not NW to SE. Anyhow if this lake chain has a name and a generally accepted explanation I would like to hear it. I know Athbasaka has its own glacier but "that's just now." Other members of this chain are no longer fed by glaciers. Very interested to see what answers and information the Geology mavens can provide.

    Answer:
i still feel the possibilities of a lot of glacial and early formative fault planes to be a part of the structural formations.........meteor impacts played a large part in the early formative stages....and the earth......if thats what we call this planet........and everything deriveved from it has a history of slow and fast changes...in most cases the life forms seem to parallel the weather and atmospheric conditions and certain geological areas produced variations of the same species.....some fossils leave not only the imprints but a time map....that is if volcanics or meteor impacts happened later there would be no fossilized evedence left.............yes i feel the idea yr holding to has merrit.....but please also realize that only a few generations ago...no one could sit and hold a globe modle of the earth andponder the formation and process that occurd........some of the 'great thinkers were not thinkers but modlers.........there is a great possibility that the great lakes was just a drainage basi that was the border of the land mass and the early ocean......a meteor oir meteor crack up could have broken the surface and brought a volcanic erruption it then could have been glaciated leaving no traces.......i remember sitting around camp fires in the arctic and milling over these possibles....one geologist proposed it may have been the same epoch of meteor impacts as there appears to be that linage....................well that leaves more questions....but thats yahoo

Do you have a specific, favorite place or National park you love to visit?
    Question:
If so, why? I love the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in northern, lower Michigan. The sanddunes and Lake Michigan and Glen Lake take my breath away every time I visit. What's your favorite park?

    Answer:
Yosemite will blow you away. There is so much concentrated in one small valley that it will just blow you away. The Sequoias will leave you with a kink in your neck from looking up. Waterfalls everywhere. Spectacular hiking of all levels. WOW! Stay at the main lodge if you can manage it. At least check it out. Everglades is interesting but you're better off viewing it from one of the commercial airboat rides on the park's northern edges. Don't stay in the park unless you love being total mosquito bait at night. The canoing is pretty good though.

The Detroit River links two of the 5 great lakes...St Clair and Lake Erie. Doesn't that make it a strait?!?
    Question:
I was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada just two miles from Detroit, Michigan, USA by bridge or tunnel. I loved to watch the Detroit skyline, fishing along the Canadian shore of the Detroit River, admiring the great lake freighters crossing between two great lakes. The Detroit River flows south from Lake St Clair into Lake Erie and is part of the boundary between Ontario and Michigan. As part of the St Lawrence Seaway, it is heavily travelled by those HUGE lake freighter vessels, because its really the "strait" between two great lakes. The name comes from the French word "de troit" for strait or narrows. Then why is it not called the Detroit Strait. The Detroit River is 52 km long. Is its name a mis-nomer? What should it be called if you are in charge. Monday was Thanksgiving Day in Canada. I give thanks to God for the rivers of Canada. Like blood vessels in our bodies, rivers give life to our country! There are approximately thirty Canadian Heritage Rivers, and this one is on the list. It was just added in 2001, along with the slightly longer Main River of Newfoundland.

    Answer:
Lake St Clair is not considered one of the Great Lakes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes What Moses wrote: 5 books of law, were called great, but also notably a "great terror" to all Israel: Dt 34:12. The Great Lakes are now called Troubled Waters http://archives.cbc.ca/IDD-1-75-1390/science_technology/g reat_lakes_pollution/ This should ring a Bible bell about the impotent man, who wanted help to get into the troubled waters, but rather was helaed by seven grace us words; And when later found giving praise to law for it, he's told: sin(law) no more, lest your latter end be a worse-end. This Thanksgiving in Canada I gave thanks to God that the word "worst" is not even found in the New Testament, and the "worse" case scenario in Revelation ends with grace: The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
