City DescriptionAnn Arbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. It is the state's seventh largest city with a population of 114,024 as of the 2000 Census, of which 36,892 (32%) are university or college students. The city, which is part of the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint, MI CSA, is named after the spouses of the city's founders and for the stands of trees in the area.
Ann Arbor was founded in January 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, both of whom were land speculators. On May 25, 1824, the town plot was registered with Wayne County as "Annarbour". The city became the seat of Washtenaw County in 1827, and was incorporated as a village in 1833. The town became a regional transportation hub in 1839 with the arrival of the Michigan Central Railroad, and was chartered as a city in 1851. During the 1960s and 1970s, the city gained a reputation as a center for liberal politics. During the 20th century, the economy of Ann Arbor underwent a gradual shift from a manufacturing base to a service and technology base, which accelerated in the 1970s and 1980s.

Where can i find a place to rent out for a private party in ann arbor michigan? Question: i'm turning 16 in june but im having my sweet 16 in may and it is in like 4 months and i live in ann arbor michigan and i need to find out where i can rent out a place for a private party and the price for it thanks.
Answer:
First, decide with your parents what your budget is -- that will help you figure out how much you can afford for room rental & food (usually they go together, depending on the venue). Then, I would start with either private rooms in restaurants, or hotel ballrooms, depending on the size of your party. And think outside the box ... like renting out the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum, or Zingerman's Deli, or the Ark!
You can actually find several good resources if you think of your party as a small wedding. For example, the Ann Arbor Visitor's Bureau (see below) has a whole list of possible wedding venues, and almost all will work for a sweet 16 party as well.
Also ask your Jewish school friends where they had their Bar or Bat Mitzvah parties, as these will likely be similar in size and budget to your party.
And don't forget, May is usually a very nice time in Ann Arbor, so don't disregard outdoor possibilities, particularly in some of Ann Arbor's great city parks (e.g. Gallup, Burns Park, etc.).
Hope that helps... have a great party and have fun turning 16!!

I am a high school junior who is looking to be accepted to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Any Advice? Question: Academic record (in-state):
4.0 GPA (unweighted)
4.45 GPA (weighted)
2160 SAT
31 ACT
I will have excellent recommendations
Extracurricular:
100+ volunteer hours
Art Club
Varsity golf
Work Experience
What do you think my chances are of being accepted?
What else can I do to boost my resume?
Also, how is Ann Arbor as a college town?
And how is the department of mathematics at the University of Michigan?
Answer:
You're in.
Here are the stats for freshman accepted in 2007:
Middle 50% GPA: 3.7-3.9.
Test score ranges of the middle 50%: SAT Verbal: 590 - 690. SAT Math: 630 - 730. ACT: 27 - 31
The only problem you may encounter is that you are OVERqualified. If you're overqualified for the school, they might not think you're entirely serious--that you're applying just as a safety--and reject you. I really think you should apply to the Honors Program (which would solve that problem).
Ann Arbor is a great college town. Both my cousins went to U Mich there and LOVED it--one loved it so much she stayed there for grad school. Their academics--including math--are great.

where can i find poster plaquing in ann arbor michigan (or in any American box store)? Question: I have a few posters from the Detroit Institute of Art that I would love to plaque. In Canada Staples does it, but over the phone they claim to not do so here in Ann Arbor. Any ideas?
Answer:
I would suggest a framing store or an art store. Here's some suggestions:
Michael's in Arborland (on Washtenaw)
Linnen's and Things on Carpenter
Barclay's on Main
If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to framing, you might consider buying standard size frames from Michael's, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. if the poster fits.
Hope that helps!!

How is job searching in Ann Arbor Michigan? Question: ...for somebody without college. Are there a lot of jobs or is it like the rest of Michigan with no jobs to offer?
Answer:
Ann Arbor's economy is pretty diverse thanks to the University and the hospitals. HOWEVER, most jobs in Michigan now require AT LEAST a two-year, technical degree. Most of the jobs available for individuals without a college degree are low-wage jobs in the service industries. You should at least consider completing a college certificate program.

What do you think of Michigan and/or Ann Arbor, Michigan? Question: I live in California. My favorite temperature is around 65-70 degrees but I do like cloudy/rainy days and I think extreme cold is better than extreme hot. I like smart, nice people who are open to new ideas.
With that in mind, what do you think I would think of Michigan?
Answer:
Michigan has every extreme. The Great Lakes, especially the Lake Michigan, are unmatched. The beaches are arguably the best in the world and are seemingly endless. The UP is awesome wilderness where you can disappear.
There is quite a bit of "culture" for better or for worse, in places like Ann Arbor/Birmingham/Royal Oak/etc. You can find your people here no matter who you are.
On the flip side, you will run into some of the most backwards backwoods hickabillies on this earth. They're are LOTS of psychos here. There are lots of boring pseudo-intellectual posers here. Lots of rich snobs. LOTS.
The first couple of months of winter are pretty and new, but be forewarned: winter in Michigan lasts from November well into April. That's a FULL 6 MONTHS.
And Detroit. The downtown is really revitalized, but the rest of it literally looks like a 3rd world country after a war.
The economy isn't the hottest, but I'm assuming you're here for school or you have something lined up.
Michigan has a lot to offer. I wouldn't dissuade you.

I borrowed the spice from out of town guests who bought it in their home town which has a large jamaican population. I want to find more so I can experiment further with jamaican cooking, but I have no idea where to buy carribean items close by.

From what I read online, this is also called Allspice.
Try Zingerman's in AA they have lots of stuff.

Traveling to Ann Arbor Michigan, what to see & do ? Question: My boyfriend and I are traveling from South Bend, IN to Ann Arbor this weekend and we are wondering what is recommended that we see and do ? What are the best places to eat ? Drink ? Shop ? We are in our mid-late twenties. Thanks!
Answer:
Here's some ideas....
- As far as food, my favorites are mostly around the Main Street area. Prickly Pear (southwest), Gratzi (Italian), and Grizzly Peak (american - bar) are all excellent IMO. For drinks afterwards, try Connor O'Neil's, Arbor Brewing Company, or Leopold's.
- Attend a Michigan basketball game (or watch it on TV at Frasier's, Ashley's, or Connor O'Neil's).
- Have lunch at Zingerman's Deli, dinner at Zingerman's Roadhouse, or a snack at Zingerman's Bake House
- Take a walk or cross-country ski through the Botanical Gardens (on Dixboro) or the Arboretum near the Hospital
- Stroll through the Main Street area, enjoying the many art galleries and shops.
- Go to Farmer's Market Saturday morning in Kerrytown
- See a show at the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase (on Liberty), the Ark (on Main), or see if there's a concert or performance at U-M.
Hope that helps -- have fun!!!

Male Strip clubs in jackson, lansing or ann arbor michigan or in those areas? Question: My friends and I are looking to go to a male strip club. Close to Jackson, MI. We don't want to go to Detroit, but that is all we can find online. Thanks.
Answer:
I just moved from the economic wasteland of Lansing MI two months ago. I don't remember any male strip clubs in the "city' BUT......
There's a place called "The Gentlemen's Club" On South Pennsylvania avenue that offered ladies nights (complete with the male strippers) twice a month. You could look them up, or call them to ask?
Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
*And you are very wise to stay out of Detroit*
