What is the city of College Park, Maryland like?
    Question:
I am in the process of looking at graduate schools and right now am in a small city that has alot to offer. My top choices are NYU, IU Bloomington, and UM College Park. I have been to both Bloomington and NYC so can someone give me some insite into what College Park is like? What there is to do? If it is big? Is it diverse? Is the town conservative or more modern and liberal? Thanks everyone!

    Answer:
I spent a number of years in College Park, MD and US 1 clearly divides the university from the rest of town. College Park does not have its own police department and relies on UMD police for safety. College Park is located in an urbanized suburban area 9 miles from DC. College Park is neither located in a cornfield like Bloomington or in a urban environment like NYC. The town is very diverse and small. The town tends to be liberal due to the presence of the University and many University faculty and staff living in and around the University. College Park has restaurants and convenient access to Metro for trips to DC. Baltimore is less than an hour away by car or commuter rail.

What is the College Park Maryland area like?
    Question:
I will be traveling to DC in April for the Cherry blossom festival and am thinking of staying in College Park and taking the metro in? Is this a good idea? Is it a safe area? How long with it take to get into DC via the metro? Thanks! DCgirl we will have our own car so that will work ok...thanks!

    Answer:
College Park has had something of a crime wave lately, lots of robberies and beatings on campus, so check the area you wish to stay in very well. Also the College Park metro is not convenient to most of the hotels (the hotels are mostly on Route 1 and the Metro is quite a ways away) so that might be a challenge for you. Make sure your hotel has a shuttle to the Metro and see how long it will take them to come get you when you return to the Metro station and want to get picked up. If you can find a hotel that's within walking distance of the Metro, then you'll be just fine but I don't think there are any! The Metro is really in a city called Adelphi and it's a pretty fair distance from the University. The U runs lots of shuttles for students but you'll really be at the mercy of the hotel shuttle. You will never get a cab from the Metro. There's just not a lot of cabs in that area. You can certainly rent a car, stay in College Park and drive to and from the Metro. Or look for a hotel in another neighborhood that is within walking distance of the Metro. DC hotel prices are sky high during the Cherry Blossom Festival but it's worth checking in the DC suburb of Arlington, VA--- not only are there lots of hotels near the Metro, but cabs in the area are plentiful, and you can get a cab back from the city direct to the hotel for less than $15 or so.

How can I find jobs around the College Park, Maryland area?
    Question:
I'm going there to college in fall, but theres no way I can afford it. Im out of state so i'm not familiar with the area. Is there any way I can notify or write to people around the area asking them for jobs?

    Answer:
There is a job board at the University of Maryland. There are also jobs advertised in the Diamondback (the campus newspaper). Beyond that, the Washington Post is the main large newspaper in the area, and you can look at the Post's classifieds online. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wl/jobs/home;WashingtonJobsSession= I3983Q14Lr006gb1ytZmYQ6tJkvWikqloBuxyestf5ZbyLtw2kzt!-1807658647 When you get to this area, look also at the alternative weekly, the Washington City Paper. In fact, it too has an online version. http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/ The City Paper is also the place to check out info about bars, bands, group house ads, and so forth. But unless you have a specific skill to market, you are probably going to have to look at jobs in retail, especially if you are limited to places near campus. Those jobs are often not advertised, because a zillion students are like you and want to work while they are at school. For those jobs, it is mostly a case of walking in the door and asking to speak to the manager. It's not easy, but it is the way to get hired. One more thing: UMd is on the Green Line subway. That means you can be in downtown DC in about 20 minutes. The school also runs a free shuttle bus to Silver Spring, MD (also about 20-25 minutes. Silver Spring used to be a rundown area, but lately it has been booming, with new stores, clubs and restaurants opening every week. So, if you can work your schedule out to allow it, you may be able to get a job away from campus. Don't automatically limit yourself to the College Park area, where there will be a lof of competition for jobs. Good luck!!

Do you need a car if you go to school at the University of Maryland, College Park?
    Question:
I am going to graduate school at the University of Maryland, College Park and living close to campus and working on campus. I will probably take the Metro to D.C. all the time to play in the city. Do you think I need a car to get around College Park or for any other reason? Thanks very much in advance!

    Answer:

How is the Ramada Limited in College Park, Maryland?
    Question:
I will be coming to an event on the University of Maryland campus this summer. I want something close to the university that is clean and inexpensive. It doesn't have to be fancy...just clean and safe. Do you have any info about this hotel? Great answer! But is traffic bad from the Greenbelt area? I am going to be going back and forth from campus a bunch and don't want to spend hours in the car. Thanks!!!

    Answer:
This a motel you want to stay away from, like many of the hotels on Rte. 1 in College Park. That being said, there are 2 Rte 1 hotels you might try. The Clarion Inn which is old, but it is close to the U of M and has a free shuttle bus and a College Park Metro stop....Rates are about $100.00. The Hampton Inn CP is nice, but more expensive at $160.00. Also, look at hotels in Greenbelt, about 10 minutes from campus. There is a Comfort Inn, Marriott, Marriott Courtyard and a Hampton and Hilton Inn. Your best bet may be the Courtyard, at about $100.00/night. **** Yous should be fine. The Greenbelt area is 3-6 miles from UMCP (see link for map). With the campus in summer session, you'll have lighter traffic, too. Plan on 10 minutes average, with 20 minutes max for backups. There is a Metro stop in Greenbelt--I'm not sure if it stops in College Park or goes into DC, tho. One last thought, look at the Holiday Inn Washington D.C.- Greenbelt; it's not bad and prices out at $ 135.00 (orbitz)

Is it possible to pay in-state tuition for University of Maryland College Park after attending for one year?
    Question:
I heard from my uncle awhile ago that if you live at University of Maryland for a year while attending the school, then there is a way for you to pay in-state tuition because you have one year of residence. I've been checking around though and can't find any further information on this. If anyone has any details, even if it doesn't apply to this University, could you tell me how this works? Thanks!!!

    Answer:
Here is the schools policy. You usually can't count your "time" in college towards residency at any school so read the policy carefully. Living somewhere doens't always make you a resident.

chances of getting into university of maryland college park?
    Question:
i am a junior and after this year my unweighted gpa would be about 3.5~3.6. my SAT score was.. critical reading (680) math (670) writing (580) and i am going to take it at least once more. my classes this year are.. chem AP, calc AP, hist AP, physics GT, dance, spanish 3 H, and english GT. what are my chances of getting into college park??? it would be great if someone who got into college park writes down their GPA and SAT scores.

    Answer:
Two big factors that will influence this, in addition to your scores are 1) are you a Maryland resident? and 2) if yes, where in Maryland are you from? UMD has a large number of out of state students compared to, say, the University of North Carolina system because Maryland doesn't put the same restrictions on that NC does. However, unlike other state systems, there is no real push from UMD to admit students from across the state of MD. So, if you are a student from, say, Baltimore City/County or other Western Shore counties, you are usually looked at more favorably than students with similar grades from Eastern Shore counties or counties further into the panhandle. These are all things to consider. It's not unusual at all to be waitlisted at College Park, so expect that going in. Your grades aren't spectacular, so all of these other factors are going to come into play.
