Nine out of 11 of our 2008 graduates are now making some or all of their living based on skills and experience gained in this course. Audience: Potential permaculture designers and trainers and those who want to take their permaculture skills to a deeper level or actively participate in creating a positive post-carbon future. Pre-requisites: The internationally-accepted requirement for enrolling in the Advanced Permaculture Design Course is the successful completion of a Permaculture Design Certificate Course including the creation of a completed design (unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions to this policy; copy of certificate will be required). Course Description: This course will cover advanced permaculture design techniques and skills, advanced mapping strategies, client intake and interaction methods, advanced details of various sustainable building and energy technologies and in-depth work with permaculture methods of food production and the creation of edible perennial ecosystems. Through the coursework � a combination of lecture, discussion, film, handouts and sample site work - students will be prepared to complete the course by independently preparing a comprehensive permaculture design on a property of choice. Each student will present her/his design to the class and will conduct an independent follow-up site visit with the course instructors for feedback and validation of proposed design. Weekend #2 Preliminary Syllabus (Friday 8:30 am to Sunday 5pm) Portland, Maine The second weekend will focus on independent student design work based on data gathered previously (prior to the course or between course weekends). Creation of a comprehensive graphical permaculture design, including overlays, for a subject property. Creation of a comprehensive client report to accompany the design including implementation plan, budget and maintenance program. Addenda will include all collected data, photos, maps, support documents, relevant regulatory documents (zoning, ordinances, covenants or other restrictions) video, completed interviews, etc. Presentation of designs to class and instructors. Scheduling follow-up site visits with instructors (to take place within 3-4 weeks after course) to complete the advanced certification process. Requirements of "Subject Property" and Pre Course Homework Assignments will be provided to each student upon registration. Instructors Charles & Julia Yelton, of Humastacia Permaculture Gardens in Whitefield, Maine are international permaculture designers and teachers. They have traveled and lectured on permaculture topics throughout the world. Formerly of Crystal Waters permaculture village in Queensland Australia, they have gone on to practice and teach for over 17 years in Asia, Europe and North America, most recently designing and implementing comprehensive permaculture gardens in Cyprus. They were the founding Co-Directors of The Permaculture Center at Newforest Institute in Brooks, Maine and have been named 2008 Still Water Fellows by the University of Maine, Orono. They split their time between Whitefield, Maine and their permaculture property in Sicily. Lisa Fernandes is the organizer and founding member of the Portland Maine Permaculture and has been a student of permaculture and green design since 1992. She is a certified team trainer and group facilitator and owned a training & consulting business for several years. She studied political science (undergraduate) and environmental history (graduate) before designing & implementing municipal waste reduction & recycling programs (with a focus on organic waste recycling). Lisa is also a gardener, certified Master Composter and has studied medicinal plants for nearly twenty years. She has worked in the public, private and non-profit sectors and currently brings her varied experience to developing & delivering permaculture training events and permaculture designs for local clients. She currently serves on the Cape Farm Alliance and is active in the Eat Local Foods Coalition. She is a principal in Resilient Homes, an ecological design and solar hot water company and was founding director of The Pattern Factory design studio at Newforest Institute.

Weaving together a visual narrative of life in Maine that is both timeless and surprising, the black and white photographs in Exposed reveal unusual perspectives and rare content. Images include a cyclist and his high-wheel bicycle in Portland ca. 1890, a look at the Portland High School wood working class in 1920, canning sardines in Lubec in the 1950s, and a peek at an 1942 operation at Trull Hospital in Biddeford, and much more.
