Slaughter was designated a town in 2002.
The name of the city figures in the title of Michael Ondaatje's novel about legendary jazz player Buddy Bolden: Coming Through Slaughter.
Slaughter is located at 30°42′59″N 91°8′40″W / 30.71639, -91.14444 (30.716484, -91.144506).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²). 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,011 people, 359 households, and 286 families residing in the village. The population density was 71.2/km² (184.3/mi²). There were 376 housing units at an average density of 26.5/km² (68.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 94.56% White, 3.56% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.40% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.79% of the population.
