- Natchitoches and the Elder Justice Act
I have an opportunity to present congressional testimony in support of the Elder Justice Act. My previous testimony before the Louisiana legislature about my father's fatal abuse resulted in some very minor reform of state law. On the one hand, I'm certainly in favor of providing equal protection to the elderly of which it is well-known they are currently deprived. On the other hand, I am concerned the Act's proposed funding and training of protective and law enforcement agencies would be wasted. No amount of funding or training can suffice to overcome cronyism and deliberate official misconduct. In my opinion, elder abuse would be better prevented by simply enforcing existing laws according to ordinary criminal and civil due process. I would like to know the local community's opinion about whether I should testify and I invite constructive suggestions.
