City DescriptionGilliam is a village in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 178 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
On May 13, 1908 a tornado struck the community around dinnertime, killing 34 people and devastating the town.
Gilliam is located at 32°49′39″N 93°50′40″W / 32.8275, -93.84444 (32.827585, -93.844388).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 178 people, 71 households, and 47 families residing in the village. The population density was 34.4/km² (88.8/mi²). There were 79 housing units at an average density of 15.3/km² (39.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 55.06% White, and 44.94% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.
There were 71 households out of which 22.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. ...
