City Description

Chatham is a town in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 623 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ruston Micropolitan Statistical Area. Chatham is located at 32°18′33″N 92°27′5″W / 32.30917, -92.45139 (32.309036, -92.451359). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²), of which, 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (13.91%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 623 people, 257 households, and 169 families residing in the town. The population density was 629.8 people per square mile (243.0/km²). There were 302 housing units at an average density of 305.3/sq mi (117.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 55.22% White, 44.30% African American, and 0.48% from two or more races. There were 257 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% were married couples living together, 22.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 31.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
