Union is located at 38°56′43″N 84°40′19″W / 38.94528, -84.67194 (38.945185, -84.671866).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.4 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,893 people, 850 households, and 783 families residing in the city. The population density was 894.4 people per square mile (345.8/km²). There were 879 housing units at an average density of 271.7/sq mi (105.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.02% White, 0.55% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.83% of the population. There were 850 households out of which 62.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 85.3% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 7.8% were non-families. 5.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
