City DescriptionIndependence is a suburban city in Kenton County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 14,982 at the 2000 census. It is one of two county seats of Kenton County . In 1842 the county of Campbell was split to form a new county, Kenton, named after a pioneer who'd helped explore the territory, Simon Kenton. The city of Independence was incorporated in 1842 to mark its independence from Campbell County.
Independence is located at 38°57′13″N 84°32′49″W / 38.95361, -84.54694 (38.953668, -84.546990).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.8 square miles (43.5 km²), of which, 16.8 square miles (43.4 km²) of it is land and 0.06% is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 14,982 people, 5,181 households, and 4,149 families residing in the city. The population density was 893.2 people per square mile (344.9/km²). There were 5,391 housing units at an average density of 321.4/sq mi (124.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.20% White, 0.96% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races.
