Highland Heights is located at 39°2′24″N 84°27′21″W / 39.04, -84.45583 (39.040035, -84.455851).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (5.9 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,554 people, 2,688 households, and 1,524 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,881.9 people per square mile (1,114.8/km²). There were 2,787 housing units at an average density of 1,225.5/sq mi (474.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.53% White, 2.12% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.
