City Description

Hawesville is a city in Hancock County, Kentucky, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 971 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the county seat of Hancock County. Incorporated in 1836, the city is named for Richard Hawes, who owned the land the city now occupies. Hawesville is located at 37°53′56″N 86°45′20″W / 37.89889, -86.75556 (37.898865, -86.755570). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²), all of it land. A of the census of 2000, there were 971 people, 409 households, and 271 families residing in the city. The population density was 747.3 people per square mile (288.4/km²). There were 441 housing units at an average density of 339.4/sq mi (131.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.25% White, 1.44% African American, 0.10% Native American, and 0.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population. There were 409 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and
