    Greenup is a city in Greenup County, Kentucky, at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Sandy Rivers. The population was 1,198 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Greenup County. Greenup is named in honor of Christopher Greenup. Greenup is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 288,649. Greenup is located at 38°34′25″N 82°50′1″W / 38.57361, -82.83361 (38.573503, -82.833549). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), of which, 0.8 square miles (2.0 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²) of it (34.17%) is water. Greenup was initially planned in 1803 by Robert Johnson, a pioneer and legislator who owned the land. It was incorporated February 4, 1818, as Greenupsburg, named after Kentucky's fourth governor, Christopher Greenup. The name was shortened to Greenup in March 1872.
