    • ENLIGHTENED PERSPECTIVE
As we begin a new year, I believe we all can look back at 2008 and find many disappointments. However, I firmly believe that if we look closer, we will also find that we had many blessings as well. Often, we tend to dwell on the negative things in life and forget the positive and that is why I want to share this email with you that I received recently. I hope it brings a smile to your day.

      ENLIGHTENED PERSPECTIVE

I've learned...That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned...That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned...That just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.

I've learned...That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned...That being kind is more important that being right.

I've learned...That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned...That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

I've learned...That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned...That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned...That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned...That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned...That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

      I've learned...That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned...That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned...That under everyone's hardshell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

    • CHILDREN LEARN BY WHAT THEY SEE, NOT WHAT THEY ARE TOLD

Lately, I have seen so many topics dealing with very personal and damaging information on individuals and their families. I like to think, as a parent, that most of these "posts" are coming from juveniles, but I'm realizing that this is not the case.

I will be the first to agree that we do and should have freedom of speech. By no means am I suggesting otherwise. I am suggesting, however, that the ADULTS that are posting on here should think about what they are saying because there have been so many innocent children get on here and see hurtful and demeaning comments about their parents. I agree that it is a parents responsibility to monitor what their children are doing while on the internet, but as a parent myself, I also know that it isn't always possible.

This website shouldn't have to be a worry for any parent and if everyone that posts on here would just "think" about what you are saying about some childs' parent or other family member BEFORE you post, then so many innocent children wouldn't be getting hurt.

EVERYONE, please put yourself in a childs mind when you are posting such negative, degrading comments. Remember, it could very well be YOUR child that reads these posts about YOU.

Parents and all adults need to set a positive example for children no matter what the situation. Remember, children learn by what they see, not what they are told.

Please help me in making this site a family oriented, community site with insightful, useful topics about our town and it's citizens.

Please email me with legitimate concerns and I will respond accordingly.

    • Beattyville Editors' Intentions and Views

I have an interest in the way we, as citizens of Lee County, are portrayed and I have to tell you, it's seldom in a positive light. I agree that there are times that this site provides me with a good laugh or two but for the most part, it's demeaning and embarassing to see how low some of my fellow Lee Countians can stoop.

In becoming editor for this site, I hope to change that. I may not succeed but I certainly won't get anywhere by not trying. Personally, I believe we live in a wonderful little town. I know our town has its problems, what town doesn't? I also know that compared to the rest of the world right now, we should be thankful each and every day for what we DO have here in Lee County instead of continuously trying to destroy it by showing ignorance, selfishness, and assinine behavior on a site that anyone, anywhere, can click on and see.

How can we, as Lee Countians, ever expect to step out of the shadow and ridicule of past mistakes that others here have made, and continue to make, if we don't put forth an effort, one at a time, to make a change? I personally don't plan to live elsewhere and I refuse to be ashamed to tell anyone that might ask where I am from. So, if by editing this site makes a positive difference in even one outsiders mind about our town, then I am satisfied. Not EVERYONE in Lee County is a drug dealer or user and not EVERYONE in Lee County is a crook, thief, or "check drawer" and I intend to do my part to let those who see this site, know that. I can only apologize for those who insist on continuing to add "fuel to the flame" of ugly misconceptions of Lee County and our citizens.

    • KY: Kentucky Dept of Fish and Wildlife - Hunters for the Hungry
Did you know that the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife has a program that allows hunters to donate any unwanted or extra deer meat to help feed the hungry? If you are a hunter that loves the hunt and the trophy more than the meat but don't want the kill to be in vain, now you have other options.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP: * If you wish to donate a deer, please take it to one of our cooperating processors.Deer must be telechecked and tagged before donating. * Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry pays processors an agreed fee to process each deer. Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry has set quotas for processors. Once those quotas are filled, hunters may be asked to pay all or part of the processing cost to donate their deer. * Processors may be too swamped to receive your deer during gun season, so you may want to call your processor in advance during gun season to make sure the processor will accept your deer. * Off-peak seasons like archery and muzzle-loading seasons are the best times to donate. * Processors cannot accept deer that have not been cleanly field-dressed, well cared for and in good condition. * Processors are vital to the program. Be sure to show them your gratitude. * Donations to the program, in the form of checks, can be mailed to Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry, P.O. Box 176, Williamstown, KY 41097, or you can make a donation through the county clerk's office when you renew your vehicle registration each year.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife website offers many helpful and insightful articles, links and resources. You can even check and see if your buddy really killed that trophy deer he's been bragging about or just to see what size buck or doe has been tagged in your neck of the woods.
