    • Decreased valuation, fuel prices result in levy increase

      A special meeting of the Jewell County Commissioners was Friday to consider the 2009 budget. Commissioners Doyle Alcorn, Dwight Frost and Steve Greene were present. Carla Waugh, county clerk, Randy Hoffmeier and Jerry Pugh of Bartlett, Settle & Edgerle were also present. It was decided to hold the county budget hearing at 10 a.m. Aug. 11.

      The valuation has decreased $1,094,780 so to maintain the budget at the current amount, the levy must increase 3.3 mills. An additional levy increase of 6.337 is the result of rising fuel costs. Combined this makes a total levy increase of 9.637 mills.

    Webber is a city in Jewell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 37 at the 2000 census. Webber is located at 39°56′9″N 98°2′5″W / 39.93583, -98.03472 (39.935809, -98.034726). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 37 people, 20 households, and 14 families residing in the city. The population density was 333.8 people per square mile (129.9/km²). There were 25 housing units at an average density of 225.6/sq mi (87.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. There were 20 households out of which 10.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.85 and the average family size was 2.21.
