Ulysses is located at 37°34′48″N 101°21′27″W / 37.58, -101.3575 (37.580055, -101.357532).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.6 km²), of which, 2.9 square miles (7.5 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.37%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,960 people, 2,086 households, and 1,577 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,059.8 people per square mile (796.3/km²). There were 2,269 housing units at an average density of 784.2/sq mi (303.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.12% White, 0.29% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 21.19% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.52% of the population.
