City DescriptionSouth Hutchinson is a city in Reno County, Kansas, United States, and a "suburb" of Hutchinson. The population was 2,539 at the 2000 census.
Founded in 1887 by Benjamin Blanchard of Terre Haute, Indiana, South Hutchinson is located at 38°1′38″N 97°56′23″W / 38.02722, -97.93972 (38.027185, -97.939769).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.07%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,539 people, 1,143 households, and 675 families residing in the city. The population density was 912.4 people per square mile (352.6/km²). There were 1,210 housing units at an average density of 434.8/sq mi (168.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.46% White, 0.79% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.23% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.32% of the population.
