City DescriptionScandia is a city in Republic County, Kansas, United States. The population was 436 at the 2000 census.
The first American flag to be flown in what is now Kansas was raised near Scandia in 1806. It wasn't settled until 1868 by Swedes fleeing a famine in their native country, and was called New Scandinavia. The name was changed to Scandia in 1876, according to post office records. From there it became an important transition point for trade and travel in the early 1900s. It is now a small rural community, occasionally noted for its Neo-Nazi political chapter.
Scandia is located at 39°47′44″N 97°47′2″W / 39.79556, -97.78389 (39.795609, -97.783757).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.2 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 436 people, 192 households, and 123 families residing in the city. The population density was 926.7 people per square mile (358.2/km²). There were 239 housing units at an average density of 508.0/sq mi (196.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.31% White, and 0.69% Native American.
