City DescriptionPeru is a city in Chautauqua County, Kansas, United States. The population was 183 at the 2000 census.
Madelyn Dunham, grandmother of Barack Obama, was born in the town in 1922.
Peru is located at 37°4′53″N 96°5′47″W / 37.08139, -96.09639 (37.081299, -96.096277).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 183 people, 87 households, and 50 families residing in the city. The population density was 485.3 people per square mile (185.9/km²). There were 101 housing units at an average density of 267.9/sq mi (102.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.35% White, 1.64% African American, 4.37% Native American, and 1.64% from two or more races.
There were 87 households out of which 23.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.1% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% were non-families. 40.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.78.
