Nearly 175 area church members gathered Sunday afternoon and celebrated the three seasons - Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas. A celebration of music was held at St. John Lutheran, Alma, featuring a selection of instrumental, singing and bell choir numbers. Presentations were provided by members of the Maple Hill Community Church, St. John Lutheran - Alma and Trinity Lutheran - McFarland, and a combined community choir presentation. This annual event is sponsored by members of the Wabaunsee County Ministerial Alliance. A door offering was collected for the Ministerial Alliance to assist them minister to the less fortunate.

- Baseball Size Hail Hammers Area
Ouch! Paul Gronquist was out of town Monday morning. When he returned home he found that a Good Samaritan had covered his car with a tarp. When he removed the tarp he discovered that the back window was gone, and the car had several large dents. Monday morning's regular activities were interrupted by an unwelcome guest as hail in a variety of sizes and shapes pounded its way through a section of Wabaunsee County. A thunderstorm that originated in the Junction City/Manhattan area gave Wabaunsee County residents ample warning that it was headed their way. At approximately 10:30 a.m. tornado sirens sounded in Alma, not to issue a warning for a funnel cloud, but to encourage people to take cover from possible large hail.

City DescriptionMcFarland is a city in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 271 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Topeka, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The history of McFarland follows a pattern found in many small Kansas towns. It came into existence because of the railroad, and had its boom days followed by a bust. The town lives on as a quiet bedroom community with little business, but actually shows a population increase as it moves into the new millennium.
Located in the beautiful Mill Creek Valley of Wabaunsee County, McFarland was founded by S.H. Fairfield in June 1887. The town was platted at the junction point where the Rock Island Railroad branched northwest to Denver and the Pacific coast, and southwest toward the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Fairfield named his new town "McFarland" after his friend Judge N.C. McFarland of Topeka, because another town he had established about 1½ miles west of McFarland on the MAB Railroad was named Fairfield.
