City DescriptionMayetta is a city in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 312 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Topeka, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Mayetta was originally owned by a family by the name of Lungar. The town was originally called Lungarsville, but when the Lungar's daughter, Mary Henrietta Lungar, died on the Wagon train west, they changed the name to Mayetta, because that had been her nickname.
Mayetta is located at 39°20′20″N 95°43′19″W / 39.33889, -95.72194 (39.338776, -95.721943).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 312 people, 111 households, and 75 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,888.7 people per square mile (708.6/km²). There were 121 housing units at an average density of 732.5/sq mi (274.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.77% White, 14.10% Native American, 0.32% from other races, and 4.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population.
