    • Community members gather as they celebrate music from Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas.

        Nearly 175 area church members  gathered Sunday afternoon and celebrated the three seasons - Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas.   A celebration of music was held at St. John Lutheran, Alma, featuring a selection of instrumental, singing and  bell choir  numbers.   Presentations were provided by members of the Maple Hill Community Church, St. John Lutheran - Alma  and Trinity Lutheran -    McFarland, and a combined community choir presentation.  This annual event is sponsored by members of the Wabaunsee County Ministerial Alliance.  A door offering was collected for  the Ministerial Alliance to assist them  minister to the less fortunate.

    • Santa schedules annual visits to Wabaunsee County

        Santa has scheduled his annual visit to Wabaunsee County with several stops on his busy calendar.

        On Saturday, December 6, Santa will make his first visit to Wabaunsee County as he arrives in Paxico.  Santa will arrive at 4:00 p.m. in downtown Paxico to hand out treats to all of the young and young at heart.  A lighted parade will follow at 6:00 p.m.   Several of the stores and shops will have discounted sales for the event.  The Paxico Merchants Association sponsors this annual event.

      The office of U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts has released the names of young Kansans who will receive his nomination for appointments to U.S. Service Academies.

    • Local Farm Bureau Members Attend Annual Meeting

        This was a special year for Kansas Farm Bureau as they celebrated their 90th annual meeting.  They also celebrated a 1.5% membership gain this past year.  

        "We are so pleased with the growth of membership which includes 1,097 new voting members.  Our job as an organization is to support farm families who earn their living in a changing industry," said KFB President Steve Baccus

        Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau assisted in this gain by also ex-ceeding their membership challenge.

      Sentencing for a former longtime state fire inspector who pleaded no contest to sexually soliciting a 13-year-old girl in September 2006 has been postponed until Aug.

    • Fire districts do budget work, some to pose ballot question

      Fire district proposed budgets came in all over the map, and some departments may have to convince their constituents they need the funds they've requested.

      Wabaunsee County Commissioners heard proposals from Fire District Nos. 3-8 Monday, and warned districts proposing levies of five mills or more that the proposal will need to be voted on by residents in the fire district.

      County Attorney Norbert Marek explained why.

      He said at one point there was a cap of five mills on fire districts and the legislature had lifted that cap. However, a judge ruled last year that fire districts requesting five mills or more still must pose the question to their voters.

    • Maple Hill Council Gets Favorable Report From Police Officer, Reaches Agreement With Fire District

        Tuesday evening, Maple Hill Part-time Police Officer John Caviness met with council members and asked for  direction.

        "What areas need to be better patrolled?  You're around more than I am," Caviness said.

        Caviness told the  council that, since he does serve part-time, he wanted to know if there are certain times of the day or certain areas of the city that need more patrolling.  

        Several council members shared their thoughts concerning routes through Maple Hill that seem to attract speeding drivers, and approximately what time of the day those infractions occur.  

    • Marriage sanctity covenant outliners marriage views from multiple area ministers

      Ministers in the Wabaunsee County Ministerial Alliance conducted a press conference Monday to express interdenominational cohesiveness on the issue of marriage.

      The alliance, which is comprised primarily of ministers at churches in the USD 329 area, has been discussing the issue of marriage for a number of years, according to Maple Hill Community Congregational Church Pastor Andrew McHenry.

      "This came about several years ago, kind of with the recognition of the divorce epidemic," he said.

    Maple Hill is a city in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 469 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Topeka, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maple Hill is located at 39°5′3″N 96°1′37″W / 39.08417, -96.02694 (39.084041, -96.027071). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 469 people, 182 households, and 133 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,880.6 people per square mile (724.3/km²). There were 187 housing units at an average density of 749.8/sq mi (288.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.80% White, 1.49% African American, 0.21% Native American, and 1.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.07% of the population. There were 182 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
