City DescriptionMaize is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. It is located in south-central Kansas, near Wichita. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Its current mayor is Clair Donnelly.
Maize was founded by Henry Loudenslager in 1886, and incorporated May 17, 1915. The name maize was suggested by the Wichita & Colorado Railroad, as the town was founded along the railroad through the corn belt.
Maize is located at 37°46′23″N 97°28′0″W / 37.77306, -97.46667 (37.772944, -97.466684).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (200.1 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,868 people, 632 households, and 523 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,274.9 people per square mile (879.6/km²). There were 668 housing units at an average density of 813.5/sq mi (314.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.47% White, 0.96% African American, 1.23% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.91% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.62% of the population.
