Louisburg is located at 38°37′11″N 94°40′45″W / 38.61972, -94.67917 (38.619751, -94.679050).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (2.63%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,576 people, 946 households, and 687 families residing in the city. The population density was 775.1 people per square mile (299.6/km²). There were 1,026 housing units at an average density of 308.7/sq mi (119.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.21% White, 0.31% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.05% of the population.
