• Wheat harvest wrapping up in Jewell County
  

  The Jewell County wheat harvest is almost completed. The 2008 wheat harvest is proving to be a successful one with reports of bushels per acre ranging from the 40s to the mid-70s.

  The wheat harvest is 60 percent done in the Esbon area. Esbon elevator

  employees have heard farmers tell of yields from 30 to 50 bushels to the acre, and 255,000 bushels of wheat had gone into the elevator in Esbon as of Monday morning.

  Wheat is half harvested in the Burr Oak area; 100,000 bushels of wheat had gone to the elevator there as of Sunday night. Bushels to the acre in the Burr Oak area have been reported in the 60s and some 70s. Test weights have been from 58 to 62. Moisture tests have come in low.

City Description

Lebanon is a city in Smith County, Kansas, United States, in the north central part of the state. The population was 303 at the 2000 census. In 1898 a scientific survey established that the geographic center of the contiguous (Lower 48) United States lies near the town and a monument was subsequently erected at the site. Lebanon is located at 39°48′38″N 98°33′22″W / 39.81056, -98.55611 (39.810492, -98.556061). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 303 people, 151 households, and 91 families residing in the city. The population density was 955.5 people per square mile (365.6/km²). There were 204 housing units at an average density of 643.3/sq mi (246.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.01% White, 0.33% Native American, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.32% of the population. There were 151 households out of which 15.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 3.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 35.8% of all households
