I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive when I first went to Manna Wok. On the outside, the place looks small and shaped like a shoe box. But when I walked in, pictures of customers decorated the walls. The seating is a bit tight because the tables are against the walls--so people who sit near the walls will feel confined. I think if they had more space, this place would be more comfortable. Now, this was my first time here. I've never had Korean food before other than Korean BBQ ribs and kimchi. So I asked the woman (who happens to own and run the restaurant with her husband) what was popular here or what she recommends for newcomers like myself. I ordered the Bibimbap, which is like a rice dish with meat and veggies and an over-easy egg on top. You drizzle special sauce on top and then stir it up and CHOW down. I thought the ingredients were great and the egg perfectly cooked. But the sauce (or something) had a strange bitter aftertaste to it, so the dish wasn't perfect. Maybe a little more seasoning would've made it delicious. Then I tried the chop chae, which is stir-fried glass noodles with your choice of meat; in this case it was beef. I rarely order beef at any restaurant unless it's at a good steakhouse or fab Mexican place. And here the beef was tough and dry, but the noodles and veggies were tasty. I added a sprinkle of soy sauce and it was perfect. The last dish I tried was the pork bulgogi with steamed rice. Mmmm...I loved this dish. It was seasoned just right, the pork was tender, and the vegetables. One word: YUM. My friends were afraid of eating hot and spicy foods so we ordered everything as "medium." If I had it my way, I'd order it "hot" all the way! Yes, so if you ever want to try some Korean food in Wichita, go to Manna Wok and sit in the middle tables for more room. Order the pork bulgogi and you'll get a bowl of steamed rice, a plate of kimchi (four different kinds), and a iceberg lettuce salad with ginger/citrus dressing. The prices are reasonable about $7 per dish. They will surprise you and take your picture before or during your meal--just a heads up. If you don't want to have your picture taken, let them know! They are really nice and sweet people. And before you leave, they give you fortune cookies and pink bubblegum. I'm definitely coming back for the pork bulgogi soon! I might even try something new!
