Arkansas City Classifieds Local classifieds for Arkansas City, KS
City DescriptionArkansas City is a city situated at the confluence of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers in the southwestern part of Cowley County, located in south-central Kansas, in the central United States. The population was 11,963 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous city of Cowley County.
The name of this city is not pronounced like the nearby state of Arkansas, but rather as "Ar-Kansas" (the final "s" is pronounced). Over the years there has been much confusion about the regional pronunciation of "Arkansas," which locals render as "Ar-KAN-zus" rather than "AR-ken-saw." Throughout much of Kansas, residents use this alternate pronunciation when referring to the Arkansas River, as well as Arkansas Street in the city of Wichita. Very few people from other states, and even much less from the state of Arkansas, use or have ever heard the anglicized pronunciation. Because of this, and for the sake of brevity, Arkansas City is most often referred to as simply Ark City.
White settlers first congregated in the area where Arkansas City now stands in the 1860s. The natives referred to the place as "Nichonka," which roughly translates as "place between the waters" — a reference to the ... Read MoreCity Contained By:City Contains:- King Opera House, Arkansas

What are the best retirement locations in Arkansas? Question: I am considering retiring in Arkansas (from Kansas City, MO). Things that are important to me are low cost of living, quality housing, an area near or in proximity of a decent sized city (10,000+), near good transportation infrastructure, availability of cultural activities and restaurants, good health care, and natural beauty (including lots of trees).
If you know of any good locations, or good places to live regardless of "retirement" designation. What are the best? Does anybody have any experience living in Bella Vista?
Answer:
Hot Springs Village near Hot Springs National Park, with its infamous Bathhouse Row, is a popular retirement destination, as is Eureka Springs, which is a picturesque little town in northwest Arkansas.
Both are beautiful locations. I suggest you check out the Tourism webpage for the state of Arkansas for more information and photographs: http://www.arkansas.com
