Where's the best place in south central kansas for stargazing?
    Question:
I have two telescopes, small refractor, and large dobsonion. I know the best accessory for them is a dark sky, but those are in short supply these days. I'm located in Wichita, and the local observatory is just too polluted for my taste. What I'm looking for is Milkyway shadows, and inky starry blackness. Aside from roving electrical black-outs,( which I happen to pray for), I'm not going to see that in Wichita. I've heard Argonia is okay, but the light pollution maps don't really agree. I need relative ease of access by jeep, and within two hours drive from my house. Are there any secret observing sights out there in the western frontier??? Maybe you can tell me.

    Answer:
The only option is to get far away from any city lights. That could mean a few hours drive out into the countryside to find dark skies. I live in Toronto Canada, and I have to travel about 3 hours northeast to get away from all the cities and larger towns. But believe me, its worth it. Anywhere near a city and all I can see are the brighter stars. A few weekends ago I was able to spend the weekend at a cottage several hours north. And the Milky Way was nothing short of spectacular. The dark lanes, dark nebulas, and bright clusters were an amazing sight, even with just the naked eye. You might check with your local observatory to see if they have useful "dark site" maps to help you. Its worth the work and the travel.
