The Fireside Inn in Thayer, Kansas is one of the most unique dining experiences in Kansas. Gene, the singing cook, will entertain you while you wait for your steak that he prepares on the indoor charcoal grill in the front of the restaurant. Gene performs a variety of country favorites, as well as classics by such artists as Elvis and Jimmy Buffet, and even takes requests. If you wish to join him and sing along, he offers hundreds of karaoke songs. Gene's steaks are absolutely the best tasting steaks we have ever had, and we have eaten steaks in a LOT of restaurants. He uses a secret recipe spray that will make your mouth rejoice. Each and ever steak is cooked to perfection, exactly as ordered. If you prefer something other than steak, the menu offers plenty of variety, including mountain oysters, fried catfish, hamburgers, grilled chicken breast, and even seafood. Gene's restaurant is so good; it is known across the States and attracts many celebrity guests. Guest have included Tracy Bird, Confederate Railroad, and Doug Stone, to mention a few. Gene isn't the only exceptional member of the Fireside Inn staff. The first lady of Thayer, Tina, is one of the waitresses. Tina provides exception service, with good humor and wit.
